Trini Martin was twenty six years old when she first learned to swim.

“My mom was afraid of water,” she said when asked about her decision to learn to swim later in life. “I always saw kids in the movies and on television having so much fun in the pool and wished it could be me, but mom always said no.

“She was so afraid of the water that it impacted me. By the time I was a teenager and my friends were hanging out poolside by themselves, I was practically phobic about it. My heart would start to pound. My mouth would go all dry. Sometimes I couldn’t even see straight.

“I didn’t realize until later that it was all because of what she had said. I had never had a bad experience with the water myself. I hadn’t even given myself the chance! The day I realized that was the day I realized I could make the change.”

Trini made an appointment with a local counselor, who told her that she may be suffering from aqua phobia. Click here for more information about the condition.

“One thing my counselor recommended was exposure therapy,” Trini said. “That meant going to swimming pools and facing my fear.

“I started out small. I went to a local pool, paid the entrance fee, and then stayed in the locker room trying to calm my breathing. I thought I was going to pass out!

“The next time, I went a little further. I stepped onto the deck and faced the water head-on. It looked like so much fun, but I just couldn’t bring myself to touch it.”

Over the course of a few months, with the help of her counselor, Trini was able to gradually attack her fear until it diminished. She dipped her toes in the water, and then got into the shallow end. By the end of her treatment, she had completed a course of swimming lessons that gave her the basics she needed to be confident and safe in the water.

“I was thrilled,” Trini said. “I had conquered my fear and it turned out that swimming was fun!”

If you’re like Trini and you love to swim, having your own pool might be just the thing you’re looking for.

Party Down!

Using a pool is even better – and safer – with friends. One great benefit to having large oval above ground swimming pools is that there’s always room for one more! Think of how much fun you’ll have inviting all of your friends over for a dip in your brand new pool.

You can stock your pool with all sorts of fun water devices. Think floating coasters or even a beer pong table that floats on the surface of the water. There’s no end to the fun you can have if you get creative and search for the best accessories.

A pool party is a great way to show off a new bathing suit or a new bathing-suit ready body. It can also be a place for you and your mommy friends to gather together and teach your new babies or young kiddos to swim in a safe, controlled atmosphere.

Since it’s in your own backyard, you might want to host a barbecue or brick oven pizza party to entertain your guests. No matter what you choose, you’re sure to create memories that will keep your friends and loved ones smiling.

Feed Your Heart

A large swimming pool can provide a great form of exercise. Swimming utilizes all parts of your body, so you can be sure that you won’t skip leg day.

Besides offering a cool place to work out on a sunny day, your pool has another benefit. Most Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, an essential nutrient. Our bodies are able to create this substance only when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Sunbathing is essential to our health and happiness!
