Daniel Andrew “Andy” Beal is a commercial banker, investor, and self-made billionaire. He’s the founder and owner of Beal Financial Corporation, which owns Beal Bank and holds over $8 billion in assets. According to Forbes’ billionaire list, his combined assets place him as the 169th wealthiest person in the world and the 61st richest person in America. Despite his success, Beal often shies away from publicity news and social media. Today, we’ll take a look at the accomplishments of this enigmatic, multi-hyphenate businessman.
Banking and investments
Recently, Andy Beal went all-in with his primary asset, Beal Bank. PR Newswire’s report notes how CSG Investments, Inc., a global buy-and-hold institution, secured an agreement between Beal Bank and Kosmos Energy, a major oil and gas provider in the US. The bank has provided partial funding to the energy company for a five-year $200 million term loan facility in the company’s Gulf of Mexico business unit, allowing them to continue extracting deep-water assets for the country and the world. This is particularly important in today’s challenging commodity price environment, as it expands the availability of various energy sources.
As seen above, Beal has accumulated most of his wealth from strategic banking and real estate investments. One of his more notable acquisitions in 2021 was the estate of late Dallas-based businessman Edwin Cox. The home was first built in 1912, and the mansion was designed by renowned architect Herbert Greene, which now sits on seven acres along Turtle Creek, Texas. While there is no known sale price, deed records with the county show Beal took a $41 million loan for the property.
Mathematics
Beal’s mathematical prowess and analytical skills go beyond his career as an investor. In 1993, he formulated the Beal Prize Conjecture, which is related to Fermat’s last theorem:
If Ax +By = Cz, where A, B, C, x, y, and z are positive integers and x, y, and z are all greater than 2, then A, B, and C must have a common prime factor.
The prize is handled by the American Mathematical Society, with the Beal Prize Committee awarding $1,000,000 to a mathematician who can publish a manuscript that can either find proof of, or a counterexample to, the Beal Prize Conjecture. This challenge was first announced in December 1997 and remains unsolved to this day, with the latest partial result done in 2014. One of Andrew Beal’s goals in presenting this conjecture is to inspire young people to think about the equation and become more interested in mathematics.
Interest in poker
On top of his love for mathematics, Andy Beal also has a passion for cards, which has given him opportunities to play for greater wealth. Although he didn’t continue as a professional poker player, Beal enjoyed the game’s many ups and downs throughout the years. Andy Beal’s poker career includes winning one of the largest hands on public record – $11.7 million. This high-stakes game was described in a book by Michael Craig, providing an interesting insight into how a non-pro can get professionals to play very cautiously. Beal played high-stakes matches with a group of top players known as The Corporation, where they tossed around limits ranging from $30k/$60k and $100k/$200k.
Although much of Andy Beal’s upcoming plans are unknown after he started shying away from the public eye, many predict that Beal will continue to invest in real estate and play poker recreationally.
