Driving is an everyday occurrence for many people throughout the country. You may drive to work, to drop your kids off at school, to go to the grocery store, to go on a road trip on vacation, and more.
With so many drivers on the road for so many reasons, an unfortunate consequence is car accidents. When considering states with the most car accidents, larger states like California and Texas lead the list as far as car accident related fatalities. However, when you consider car accidents in general, including fender benders and other minor accidents, the following are among the top states for car accidents:
South Carolina
South Carolina is one of the top states for both car accidents in general and for car accident fatalities. A not insignificant portion of the population of South Carolina has an at-fault car accident on record, and this portion is much higher than the national average.
As you will see, South Carolina is just the first of several southern states on the list, and the south in general is the region of the county with the most car accidents.
Massachusetts
Like South Carolina, a much higher than average number of residents have an at-fault car accident on record. However, unlike South Carolina, Massachusetts has very few car accident fatalities. So while there is a high number of car accidents in this state, many of them are minor and non-life-threatening.
Ohio
Ohio is very similar to Massachusetts in all respects. While the number of residents with at-fault car accidents is much higher than average, the number of fatalities is significantly lower than average. So while many car accidents take place in Ohio, most do not involve fatalities.
Georgia
Georgia is another southern state on the list. With a high number of accidents and a high number of fatalities, this is definitely a state to be careful in when you are driving. In addition, the number of car accident fatalities in Georgia compared to the population of the state makes it clear that Georgia’s roads are among the most dangerous in the country.
North Carolina
To round out the list is another southern state, North Carolina. With the number of at-fault accidents much higher than average, and the number of fatalities slightly higher than average, North Carolina is another state to be careful driving in.
While you should really be careful driving no matter what state you are in, there are clearly states with a combined high number of minor accidents as well as car accident fatalities. California and Texas are also included in the latter.
If you do find yourself in the unfortunate situation of being in a car accident in your home state or in another state, after seeking medical attention, you will probably want to make several other calls, including to your insurance company and, depending on the circumstances, to a car accident lawyer. Always try your best to be safe behind the wheel, regardless of which state you are driving in.
